Section 9.3 : Area with Parametric Equations

1. Determine the area of the region below the parametric curve given by the following set of parametric equations. You may assume that the curve traces out exactly once from left to right for the given range of \(t\). You should only use the given parametric equations to determine the answer.

\[x = 4{t^3} - {t^2}\hspace{0.25in}\,\,y = {t^4} + 2{t^2}\hspace{0.25in}1 \le t \le 3\] Show Solution

There really isn’t too much to this problem. Just recall that the formula from the notes assumes that \(x = f\left( t \right)\) and \(y = g\left( t \right)\). So, the area under the curve is,

\[\begin{align*}A & = \int_{1}^{3}{{\left( {{t^4} + 2{t^2}} \right)\left( {12{t^2} - 2t} \right)\,dt}}\\ & = \int_{1}^{3}{{12{t^6} - 2{t^5} + 24{t^4} - 4{t^3}\,dt}}\\ & = \left. {\left( {\frac{{12}}{7}{t^7} - \frac{1}{3}{t^6} + \frac{{24}}{5}{t^5} - {t^4}} \right)} \right|_1^3 = \require{bbox} \bbox[2pt,border:1px solid black]{{\frac{{481568}}{{105}} = 4586.3619}}\end{align*}\]
