I have been informed that on March 7th from 6:00am to 6:00pm Central Time Lamar University will be doing some maintenance to replace a faulty UPS component and to do this they will be completely powering down their data center.
Unfortunately, this means that the site will be down during this time. I apologize for any inconvenience this might cause.

Section 5.1 : Dividing Polynomials
5. Use synthetic division to divide \(7{x^3} - 1\) by \(x + 2\).
Show All Steps Hide All Steps
Start SolutionHere is the synthetic division. We’ll leave it to you to check all the numbers.
\[\begin{array}{*{20}{r}}{\left. {\underline {\,{ - 2} \,}}\! \right| }\\{}\\{}\end{array}\,\,\,\,\begin{array}{*{20}{r}}7&0&0&{ - 1}\\{}&{ - 14}&{28}&{ - 56}\\\hline7&{ - 14}&{28}&{ - 57}\end{array}\] Show Step 2The answer is then,
\[7{x^3} - 1 = \left( {x + 2} \right)\left( {7{x^2} - 14x + 28} \right) - 57\]Note that we only gave one form of the answer (unlike the first couple of problems) since this is often the form we need when using synthetic division and it is also the form that method is set up to give.
